    ATL Stories: Remembering Civil Rights leader Rev. C.T. Vivian

    It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Civil Rights leader Rev. C.T. Vivian. He was two weeks from celebrating his 96th birthday. The former Atlanta City councilman and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference dedicated his life to faith, service and equality. The C.T. and Octavia Vivian Museum and Archives, a local nonprofit showcasing Vivian’s legacy, announced that the funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta. The service will be open only for the family, but local network WSB-TV is scheduling a livestream broadcast. View the video dedication below.

    It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Civil Rights icon and American hero, Rep. John Lewis. He was 80 years old. Regarded as “the Conscience of Congress,” Congressman John Lewis steadfastly fought for equality as representative of the 5th District of Georgia for more than three decades.

    As a central figure in the Civil Rights Movement, Lewis participated in the Freedom Rides of 1961 and in 1963, Lewis became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. That same year, he helped plan the March on Washington and was the youngest speaker at the event.

    Over the course of his life, Lewis has been honored with over 50 honorary degrees and numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, the Liberty Medal in 2016, NAACP’s Spingarn Medal in 2002 and the sole John F. Kennedy “Profile in Courage Award” for Lifetime Achievement.

    In April 2019, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Hartsfield-Jackson honored Congressman John Lewis by unveiling “Good Trouble: A Tribute to Congressman John Lewis,” a multidimensional art exhibit in ATL’s Domestic Terminal atrium.

    The idea for a tribute wall for the civil rights icon began in 2017 when Councilperson Andre Dickens authored legislation to create a task force for determining the best ways to honor Lewis. ATL’s Art Program recommended Gary Lee Super as lead designer of the tribute, who collected artifacts befitting the 25-foot space, including Lewis’ beloved chickens he preached to as a boy, his Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded in 2011, and the pen former president Lyndon B. Johnson used to sign the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was gifted to the former Freedom Rider. Atop the display, a painting by artist Alexi Torres depicts images and icons of Lewis’ life.

    Prior tributes to Lewis in Atlanta include the renaming of Freedom Parkway to John Lewis Freedom Parkway, a painted trail representing the Freedom Riders, and John Lewis Plaza.

    To honor Lewis, several “Celebration of Life” ceremonies will take place in Alabama, Washington D.C. and Atlanta, which will be livestreamed on several platforms.

    In light of the pandemic, the family encourages Congressman Lewis’s many supporters to organize John Lewis Virtual Love Events in their homes to watch the ceremonies. They will be live streamed on multiple platforms. To fully participate, all are encouraged to tie a blue or purple ribbon on their front doors or in their front yards to commemorate his life. They can post video, photos, songs, or any kind of virtual tribute to Rep. Lewis at #BelovedCommunity or #Human Dignity or leave a written tribute at johnlewislegacy.org.     ATL Skypointe is Open and “Ready When You Are”

    For the past couple of months, we have been living in quite uncertain times. I don’t think you need me to emphasize what an unprecedented whirlwind things have been lately. As many of us begin the journey toward normalcy, such as traveling again, ATL wants you to know that they are open, safe and ready when you are.
    Personally, outdoor activities I’ve missed most have been traveling and dining out, and I would place a bet that a lot of you feel the same way. In fact, many of you have reached out via social media to ask what restaurants are open and operating at ATL.
    So, what does dining in a restaurant at ATL look like today? I got an opportunity to talk to Nkosi Baker, a bartender at the popular TGI Fridays in the Airport’s domestic atrium and Valencia Jackson, general manager of Chick-fil-A on Concourse A to get a little insight on what’s happening at their restaurants.
    Destination Skypointe: What has it been like at the restaurant post COVID-19?
    Nkosi: “The passengers have been really cool. When they come in, we talk about what’s going on. Share opinions. It’s still good times and good conversation. Customers have been good about protecting themselves and wearing masks.”
    Destination Skypointe: What are you all doing differently?
    Nkosi: “We are wearing masks and gloves and washing our hands every 10 to 15 minutes. We also wipe down the tables and clean with an antibacterial solution daily. We are also looking into using disposable menus.”
    Destination Skypointe: How have the extra cleaning protocols impacted the business?
    Nkosi: “It’s extra work, but for the overall health of our customers, it’s worth it.”
    Destination Skypointe: Any changes to the menu?
    “Some items have been taken off the menu. But for the most part, the menu is the same.”
    I asked Valencia similar questions to find out how things have been for her and her crew on Concourse A.

    Destination Skypointe: What has it been like at the restaurant post COVID-19?
    Valencia: It’s been pretty slow. People are trying their best to be at ease.”
    Destination Skypointe: What are you doing differently at Chick-fil-A post COVID-19?
    Valencia: We are requiring all employees to wear facemasks and gloves. Before the cashiers would make the beverages, now we have them only taking payment to limit contact [with the food and drink].
    Destination Skypointe: Have you had any menu changes?
    Valencia: Yes. We have a limited breakfast menu, and have had to remove a few items, such as eggs and bacon.
    Valencia went on to explain that the menu limitations are due to limited on-site staff at this time. More people are required to prepare some of the meals that were normally offered.
    Destination Skypointe: Share something positive that has happened since all of this began.
    Valencia: “The customers seem to be very happy to see that we are open. Just the other day, one of them thanked us and wanted to take our picture. It’s very heartwarming to see. They appreciate that we are open.”
    When I asked both Nkosi and Valencia what they wanted the public to know, their responses were similar, but very clear. They want all to know that they are open and doing all that they can to make sure their customers feel comfortable and safe.  A sentiment that I’m sure is shared by all of the ATL concessionaires.
    “We have to get back to normal,” Valencia said right before we ended our call.
    I think we all are working toward and looking forward to that. One step at a time – or in this case, one meal at a time. So, if you’re passing through ATL in the near future, please be sure to visit and grab a bite from either of these great places, with an even greater staff.

    If you have some extra time on your hands and happen to be craving seafood, this post is for you. One of my favorite things about ATL is the plethora of seated dining options. When I travel, I like to arrive early to give myself plenty of time to get settled without having to rush. Once I’m through security, rather than sit by the gate for an extended amount of time, I love to use that opportunity to enjoy a nice meal in one of the Airport’s eateries. It’s a great way to unwind and fill up before the flight ahead of you. Because, let’s face it, most times that bag of peanuts just doesn’t cut it. Below are a few of my favorite restaurants that offer the opportunity to sit down, relax and savor some quality seafood dishes.

    Jekyll Island Seafood Company – Concourse F

    Located on Concourse F, the feel at Jekyll Island Seafood Company offers an open view of the everyday bustle of the world’s busiest airport, while also giving you the intimate feel of a traditional sit-down restaurant. Two of my menu favorites are the Crawfish Tacos and the Shrimp and Grits. The Crawfish Tacos are a cool twist on one of my favorite foods and I highly recommend. Salty bites of fried crawfish on a corn tortilla topped with a sweet and briny pineapple salsa. One word — delicious!
    Next up, the Southern quintessential Shrimp and Grits. This is a dish that this Northern girl didn’t grow up eating, but is now a “go to” whenever I go out to eat. Jekyll Island Seafood Company serve their large, juicy and flavorful shrimp atop a bed of creamy grits and the fried onion rings as garnish added another crispy layer of flavor.

    LowCountry New Southern Cuisine – Concourse A Centerpoint

    With signature dishes created by renowned chef G. Garvin, LowCountry touts a modern spin on traditional Southern cuisine. Located on Concourse A, LowCountry gives you the option to choose an entree and two of their delicious sides. I recommend the blackened shrimp or the grilled salmon. When it comes to sides, the choice is yours; but if you’re going full-on Southern fare, I say why not opt for the macaroni and cheese? LowCountry’s macaroni and cheese is creamy, cheesy and delicious. You may want to get extra!

    Phillips Seafood – Concourse D Centerpoint

    Phillips Seafood is another one of ATL’s gems, a full-service, sit-down restaurant that almost makes you forget that you are in an airport. With nice atmosphere, modern decor and a full bar, it is a perfect place to unwind. There are a lot of delicious entrees and appetizers to choose from, from seafood bisque to crab cakes, blackened or grilled fish and even lobster ravioli, I think the biggest challenge will be making a final decision on what you want to order. I settled on the crab cakes and they were GOOD.

    Veggie lovers unite! Today we’re talking all about a few delicious meal options here at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that skip the meat but not the flavor.

    When you have food restrictions, such as being a vegetarian or vegan, going out to eat can be a bit frustrating. Often you have a hard time finding anything on the menu that suits your needs. This can be especially challenging when you are restricted to an airport since once you pass security, you are stuck until your flight takes off.

    Fortunately, if you are flying out of ATL, this won’t be a problem.

    With numerous food options to choose from (post-security), you should have no problem finding something satisfying to eat.

    Below are a few of my favorite vegan/vegetarian meal options. And if you’re wondering, no I did not go the easy route and list a bunch of salads.

    New Year’s resolutions

    After all the holiday indulgence of egg nog, baked hams, stuffed turkeys and sweet treats, it’s not uncommon for many of us to try and start 2020 off on a healthier note. As we start the month of February, have you been sticking to your goals?
    It’s easier to stay organized when you’re at home, but it can be tough to stay the course when you are traveling. So, if you happen to be traveling through ATL, here are a few ways you can keep that “New Year, New Me” resolution on track.

    Healthy bites

    I know food and beverage options are few at some airports, so the thought of locating a healthy snack may seem laughable. However, ATL has fantastic, healthy options on every concourse that go well beyond a premade sandwich or uninspiring salad. Here are a couple of my favorites:

    Fresh 2 Order – Concourse B

    Healthy salads, paninis, grilled vegetables – you name it, they have it. And like the name says, it’s fresh and made to order. My personal favorite is the spinach salad with grilled salmon. Spinach, strawberries, toasted almonds, blue cheese crumbles, cranberries and a sweet raspberry vinaigrette.

    We Juice it – Domestic Atrium

    It’s not often you will find fresh juice at an airport, which is why We Juice it is a cool addition to the restaurants here. I love how they blend smoothies like the “Veg Head,” fresh juices like the “Flight Risk” and even juice shots like the “Jet Lag.” Now keep in mind, this location in the Domestic atrium is great when you’re coming off of a flight and need to get a boost before you head home. But if you’re getting ready to fly out, remember to finish your drink before you head through security. We wouldn’t want that freshness to go to waste!

    Now if your goals include boosting your workouts, re-up on some gear before boarding your flight. ATL has you covered.

    InMotion Entertainment – All Concourses

    Whether you like your workout mix with fast-paced beats or a more zen and chill vibe, you can stop at one of the many InMotion Entertainment stores to grab a pair of the latest and greatest headphones so you can listen in style. I tend to forget my headphones (and charger!), so it’s great to be able to stop at any of their convenient locations.

    Spanx – Coucourse E

    Yes, there is a Spanx here! Known for their incredible undergarments, Spanx has expanded to some equally incredible activewear. I, for one, always feel a little more motivated when I’m wearing a good outfits, so stop by to pick up that cute crop top/leggings combo for your workout.

    Walk the walk

    As an added commitment to your healthy start to the New Year, you can opt to walk to your concourse rather than take the Plane Train. It is a great way to get those steps in as well as immerse yourself in some of the Airport’s amazing art installations.

    Connection to a Legacy – Happy Birthday, Dr. King

    Two of the most special slices of Atlanta’s rich history are being the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. Long after Dr. King’s untimely death, his impact continues to live all over the world; but in Atlanta, the opportunity to immerse yourself in his incredible legacy is really something special. In the City of Atlanta, you have amazing access to Dr. King’s childhood home located on the storied Auburn Avenue, Ebenezer Baptist Church (which he co-pastored with his father “Daddy King”), and The King Center. However, if the only time you will spend in Atlanta is in Hartsfield-Jackson before your flight, you don’t have to worry about missing out. As we celebrate what would have been Dr. King’s 91st birthday, here’s how you can honor his life and legacy right here at ATL.

    Paschal’s – Concourse B

    Brothers James and Robert Paschal opened the original Paschal’s in 1947. What started as a 30-seat luncheonette serving sandwiches and sodas has become – and is now considered – an Atlanta institution. Although it is renowned for its delicious southern cuisine, Paschal’s is best known for serving as the unofficial headquarters of the Civil Rights Movement. In the 1960s, Dr. King, former UN Ambassador Andrew Young, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy Jr., and other notable civil rights leaders would meet at Pascal’s to eat, plan and strategize the movement that changed the world.  I highly recommend visiting the Airport’s outpost of the famous eatery to dine like a legend. The fried chicken and peach cobbler are not to be missed!

    Sweet Auburn Market – Concourse F

    Sweet Auburn Market is another Atlanta cornerstone that has branched out to Hartsfield-Jackson. The Sweet Auburn Historic District in Atlanta had one of the largest concentrations of black businesses in the country. It was an epicenter of prosperous black middle class and upper class families from the 1890s to the 1930s. The original Sweet Auburn Market started back in 1918 and was one of few places in a racially segregated Atlanta where black and whites were able to shop alongside one another (although blacks were only allowed to sell goods from the market curb). 
    Today, both the Atlanta and ATL Sweet Auburn Market serve as quaint indoor markets with much to offer. The ATL installment, located in the International atrium, includes snacks to pick up before your flight as well as a bar, tapas, paninis, coffee, baked goods, and other tasty preparations.

    Legacy of A Dream…Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Exhibit – Concourse E

    A must-see exhibit when you visit ATL is the MLK Jr. installation on Concourse E. The King center was kind enough to lend some incredible artifacts to the Airport to display, such as images from the Montgomery bus boycott, rare personal family photos and some of Dr. King’s personal effects, including some articles of clothing (which I think are some of the most striking pieces).  The suit he wore to meet with President Lyndon B. Johnson, one of his pulpit robes, and his wristwatch and glasses are all right there on display. It is really a powerful and humbling experience.
    If you are someone who is thankful for Dr. King’s dedication and sacrifice, I encourage you to carve out some extra time before or after your flight and take a tour of the concourses. It is a unique way to enjoy some wonderful Atlanta history and honor one of America’s heroes.

    We are on the countdown to Christmas! Can you believe it is only several days away? It really seems like time goes into ultra-high speed when the holidays come around, making it easy to get flustered. But if you’re flying through ATL and haven’t checked off everyone on your gift list, you are in luck! This airport has amazing shopping options with a little something for everyone. 
    Although I’m no Oprah, I’ve done some legwork for you and picked out some of my favorite things at some of ATL’s best stores to give you a little shopping inspiration.

    I have always loved charm bracelets and what I love about Pandora is the personalized aspect of their jewelry. Every little addition to their signature bracelets can be a small reminder of some sweet memory. And that’s what makes it really special.

    The gift of wellness and relaxation is always appreciated, which is why you can’t go wrong treating someone in your life to one of the crafted face, body, hair or skincare products from Lather.     “I have too many handbags,” said no women, ever. There is so much to love about the craftsmanship and beautiful silhouettes of a Michael Kors bag. You will also love the experience of walking through ATL’s Michael Kors store with all the bright white displays which make all the products look irresistible.

    Nothing beats a well-dressed man. Brooks Brothers has been in the business of dressing men, well, since 1818. Hard to believe you can find this retailer in an airport, but this is part of what makes ATL special. Easy to grab your well-dressed guy (or aspiring fashionisto) something nice before your flight.

    Brookstone – Concourse B Centerpoint

    Known for their innovative gadgets that make life easier, comfortable and sometimes more fun! I know my father and husband love gifts like these. Whether a back massager, a power pack, headphones … you name it, Brookstone has it.

    Duty Free Americas  – Concourse F10

    All I can say about Duty Free Americas stores is you have to see them to believe it.  These stores are kind of a mall in one space. So, it is the perfect place to get a gift for anyone on your list. Here are just a few of the things I found during my visit.

    The musical gifts of Sir Darren Jon have been appreciated for almost 20 years. Beginning in the traditional setting of the formal church, he honed his talents under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Hudspeth. Continuing his studies at Morris Brown College and Georgia State University, he sought out other non-traditional avenues to broaden his musical outlook.

    He interned at the famous Dopplar Studios in Atlanta. During his time there, he was able to grow in the technical areas of the music industry. From there, he went on to become a sought-out sideman in the Atlanta metro area. He played on several recordings for hip-hop artists including Young Jeezy, Fabolous, Freeway and Young Joc. You can hear his most recent works on the newly released project by the influential artist Big Krit.

    When he isn’t in the studio creating timeless music, you can find Sir Darren Jon on any given tour with the likes of R&B juggernauts Jagged Edge or Monica. As his schedule fills with new opportunities to perform with nationally renowned artists in the coming months and beyond, he has also taken time out to release a musical project with collaborators DJ Jamal Ahmad and DJ Mark Angel (Dangerfeel Newbies). The project, “Hariet,” received rave reviews from music insiders and tastemakers alike; it garnered the attention of music supervisors which led to a feature in the hit show, “Being Mary Jane.” The full story has yet to be told on all that Sir Darren John will contribute to the world through music.

    Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has no shortage of excellent places to eat. This month, that list of excellent places to eat got even longer with the newly renovated centerpoint dining area on Concourse C called “The Connection.” This expansion included a brand new SaladWorks, Great Wraps, Leeann Chin, Bantam & Biddy, and the one and only Krispy Kreme.
